Here is this board's first LOST-related theory. It is one many of you have probably seen, but for those who haven't:
Okay... this is my grand theory on the Widmore-Dharma connection. It will be periodically updated as I see fit. Thank you and namaste.
Here is what I thought on the Widmore-Dharma connection. I thought that they were once connected and Widmore supplied everything to Dharma early on.
However, as the project went on, with more and more mistakes by Dharma...
- The Incident
- Possibly illegal recruitment
- Possibly illegal experiments hidden by the island
... Widmore wanted out. His company was already rich and successful, and Dharma was a risk to his legality.
After Widmore left, Dharma was run exclusively off money from the mysterious Hanso Foundation. They became a team of rogue scientists subverted from the world. Dharma projects gradually become more dangerous and illegal.
Widmore formerly supplied the island, but after they left the partnership with Dharma, they lost track of it. Likely only Dharma scientists could find the island. Widmore therefore knew the island existed and knew about the magnetic properties.
Widmore formed a last ditch effort to find the island for unknown reasons. The island still perhaps had the potential for massive profits. Widmore devised a race around the world, and under that guise he planned to have reports from hundreds of people sailing through the south Pacific.
After Desmond disappeared from the race, it became clear to Mr. Widmore that he had crashed on the island. Widmore took immediate steps for a cover-up and attempted to limit its liability.
Meanwhile, Penelope was putting full effort into finding Desmond. She eventually used her sources to discover locked records regarding the island, the partnership with Dharma, and the possibility that Desmond had crashed there. From then on she attempted to find magnetic anomalies which would lead her to the island.
In the beginning of the project Dharma and Widmore participated equally in the partnership, each one sending their own scientists and materials. After Dharma and Widmore split, Dharma subverged and turned on their Widmore scientists. The Widmore scientists took quick action taking control of the medical hatch and securing supplies, and became the Others.
The boat the Others gave to Mike will take Mike to Dharma's rescue coordinates. Widmore scientists won't risk taking the one route off the island because it is controlled by Dharma.
Razinski was a scientist from Widmore who didn't know about the Others. He was split at the time of Dharma's betrayal. He continued to press the button and to search the island for traces of his fellow Widmorians. Unfortunately, he was searching when Widmore scientists were still hiding underground. He referred to the hostiles meaning the Dharma scientists who attempted to eliminate Widmore from the island. Razinski had helped build the Swan after the incident, and was the primary force to form the safecheck system. He understood the importance of his work, but eventually was so depressed by his limited future that he committed suicide.
